THE
PREFACE.
T may be expecled, that Ifiould give fowe Account of my publifhing this little Tratl ; feme hints of -which take as follow : It pleas' d the Lord, after he had call'd me by his Grace, and reveal'd his Son in me, roGal. i. 15, \i\ make great Manife flat ions of his Love to me, under the fealing Work of the Lord the Comforter, which filfd my Heart with Joy unfpeakable and full of Glory, i Pec.i. $. Soon after this, the Providence of God cafl Mr. Huf- fey'j Book, The Glory of Chrift Unveil'd, into my Hands, which was abundantly blefs'dfor my further lnflruElion, Confirmation and Omfolation. 1 may fay, concerning the DoElrines of the Gofpel, which are there upend in fuch a glorious Light ; as the Apoflle did to the believing Theflalonians, For our Goipel came i Thef. i. ft not unco you in Word onlv, buc alfo in Power, and in the Holy Ghoft, and in much Aflurance. By means of which I was jnade to drink deeper into the Freenefs, Fuhiefs, Eternity, and Unchangeablenefs of God's Love, under the Spirit's witnefs of perfonal Inter efl. But, oh I the ravifhing Joys my Soul felt , while fwimming in Love's Ocean ; in diving into its unfathomable Depths. I have often thought* that as the natural Man is utterly a Stranger to that fpiri- tual Joy, which fillet h the Hearts of the New-born, /oProv. xiv. sg likewife Believers themfelves, while under a prevail- ing Spirit of Bondage, are greatly Strangers to that glo- rious Joy which fills the Hearts of fealed Saints. •when the Love of God, like a mighty Deluge, over-' Rom.v. 5. Jjov-\ er of my Scul, being (lied abroad
by the Holy Ghoft, it had no fuch Effecl upon me, as the carnal Minds of Men imagine ; who think, that the Difcovery of Free Grace gives liberty to Jin, No, but on the other hand, my Soul was fweetly drawn Jer. xxxi. 3. by the powerful Influence of God's Love, to love him again, to hate Sin, to thirfl after the hightft Holintfs, in Conformity to Chrifl ; and Jo to give up my Jo If to Jerve him, from the fretfl Principle, whilfl drawn by the Jlrongejl Motives, as being under the higheft En- gagements. And, fure I am, that if the Souls of the Saints dont live under the quickning Influence of Goat Free Grace, their Obedience is too much merce):aryy lifelefs, and Jormal ; not at all be coining that neamefs of Relation, and dearuefs of Love in which they Jland. The Servant works for LVages out of a Principle of Fear, knowing, that if he dont pleafe his Maflcr he muft turn out of Doors ; but the ingenuous Sen ferves his Father out of a Principle of Lave and Gratitude, as having fettled an Inheritance upon him, even whiljl he knows his Relation cannot be broken. And though it is true, that all the Saints ftrve God out of a Prin- ciple of Love ; yet their filial Obedience rifeth propor- i]ohn fir, is.tnn ably with their Faith of Relation. If perfect Love lias not caft out Fear, the Performance of Duty ff rings too much from a Principle of Self-love, fear of Hell, or the like ; fur it's nothing lefs than the Love of God, manijefled by the Spirit (in all the Per- fection of its Nature, as it jhi,te> in, and flows through ■ the Mediator) and fo apprehended by Faith, that can engage the Soul to ferve the Lord in the Freedom of a Child. Put to return,
Tfhe Lord having (as was f aid) fiWd my Heart with Joy iirifpeakablc, I fought to exprefs my ifhank- fulnefs in Jome Hymn of Praife (in which I had ma- ny precious Seafcus) but not finding one that did fully exprefs the comp)ehcnfive Views I then had, I fet about making one> which I chiefly defigned for my oxvn

the Hand, and led me to take fome Turns with bim-
felfin the vafi Field of boundlefs Grace, he there floewd
me a Variety of Wonders, which fo multiplied upon
me, that Ifonnfaw 1 could not contracl \m into the
narrow Bounds of an Hymn, and therefore gave my
J elf further Scope ; and when 1 had finifti* d my Verfes I
communicated them to fome intimate Friends, that fo
we might mutually rejoice together. But in fome tracl
ofT'ime many Copies were taken, and through the Heed-
iefnefs of Tranfcribers many Errors crept in, which
was one Motive with me to print them. But I hope,
the main Spring that has fet all the Wheels in motion,
in order to bring about this Work, is, the Glory of God,
and the Good of Souls.
Since they were defigned for the Prefs 1 have made fome confiderable Alterations and Additions. 1 have nlfo placd the Scriptures in the Margin which are glanced at in the Line.
I have, indeed, met with fome Difcourage?nents in my own Minds as to making them public, from my own Weaknef, Unworthinefs, dec. which has made me rejetl the Motion of fome that importund me to it. And, perhaps, Satan has not been wanting to diffuade me from it, by figgefting, this Work both as needlefs and ufelefs. But I have been encouraged, from the Acceptance of the Widow9 s Mite, which was Luke xxi. 1,3; in it f elf (like this little Piece) very inconjiderable, if compa/d with thofe large Gifts, which others, out of their Abundance, had caft into the Treafury.
J expeB that I fl)all meet with Reproaches, and that the Truths herein contained will meet with Oppojition, not only from common Profejfors, but, perhaps, from fome of the Saints themf elves, we not being, as yet, come up to the Unity of the Faith, in the Knowledge Eph. iv. i$# of the Son of God, and fo dont fee Eye to Eye ;ifa. lii. 8. this being a Glory refervd until the latter Day, which is very defireable to the Souls of the Saints ;for they all love Chrift's appearing and Kingdom, though they have 1 Tim. iv. 2,

As to that Notion, of the Pre- exifience of Chrifl9 s human Soul, though fume good Men may have fallen in with it, that are found in the Docirine of the fa- cred Trinity in Unity ; yet 'tis to be feard, that the mofl-of tkem which hold it are not [0; and, that the End for which they maintain it, is to deftroy the Divine Perfonality of the. As to tbe Poem on the fpecial Work of the Spirit , &bicb 1 have placd at the End cf the Wonders of Grace, 1 would not have any from thence think, that I efteem that part of the Spirit's Work as a Wonder . of Grace inferior to the refl ; no, I believe, that all tbe Acts, and Works of the Three Perfons in God, as they have a joint Hand in the Salvation of the Elect, fhine forth with an equal Splendor. But when my Soul was fir ft drawn out to fpeak fornething in the jowth Part, about the Work of the Spirit, I faw this Sub] eel naturally divided it felf into thefe two Brunches, viz. his general, and his fpecial Work, both which J dejigned to have taken in ; but in going over the fir jl 1 found it to befuch a large Field, that I could not (without f welling this part too big to bear any Proportion with the other five) make any Progrefs into the latter, and therefore contented my felf with only giving fome general hints as 1 went along.
But fome Time after this, my Heart was again drawn out, to fpeak fomewhat particularly about the fpecial Work of the Spirit, which I thought might not be amifs to place by it felf, in that Order in which it now /lands, fince it is fuch a copious Subjefi. I hope the Hymns may be of ufe to fome Saints.
